9 Ways to Beat the Post-Holiday Blues

The Holidays can be an extremely stressful time. Many of us work very hard trying to make the events special. Then after all the preparations and efforts, it is suddenly over, in one day. The emotional let-down can be strong. If you experience these post-holiday emotions of blues or sadness, you are not alone. It is estimated that 64% of the population experience the blues during and after the holidays, and it can lead to depression, putting us at higher risk for emotional or comfort eating. This is often a culprit of weight gain. While it is usually only temporary, we can make some changes to address it.
9 Ways to Beat the Post-Holiday Blues
- Acknowledge the feelings and accept that they are normal. Be kind and gentle to yourself. Reflect on the good memories of the holidays and focus on those you are grateful for.
- Give yourself time to readjust back to your more normal routines. Set realistic expectations for yourself.
- Prepare nutritious meals and eat at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day. Staying well-nourished will help prevent snacking on leftover holiday foods.
- Schedule in time for exercise. Even 10 minutes of moving your body can help you to feel better. If you can get outside during daylight, all the better.
- Make sleep a priority and get back to your regular bedtime routine. Research has shown that getting at least 7 hours of sleep at night will help your body better regulate your hormones.
- Plan some self-nurturing activities. If you gave up on spending time doing the things you enjoy during the Holidays, get back to them now.
- Start preparing for something you are looking forward to. Get ready to start your next endeavor, make a list of what to pack for your next trip, or research some places you want to visit this year. Try to get excited about the next event.
- Find purpose and meaning for your life. Look for opportunities to be more socially connected. Join an interest group or club. Volunteer on a project you are passionate about. Research has shown that community or social involvement can increase our meaning and happiness.
- Talk to someone about your feelings. Your Keep It Off Team is always here to listen and encourage you.
